Aircraft Tow Tractor - Aircraft propulsion is typically driven by a dedicated ground vehicle attached to or supported by the nose landing gear, with the engine off. Service and service can occur both in the movement of the aircraft. This affects the qualification of flight crew members on board during operational announcements and maneuvers. As an out-of-service part of an aircraft maintained by maintenance personnel, it may follow pushback from the nose inlet of an empty aircraft with the engine off.
Once the person in charge of the aircraft's flight section confirms that the person in charge of the ground vehicle operating the tow has "released the brakes", the ground crew is responsible for safe maneuvering. Aircraft are subject to any ATC clearances that may be requested and arranged in advance.

Unless the maneuver is conducted outside the ATC-controlled area of operations, RTF clearance is required for its execution. If the aircraft is towed to the starting position or push and hold position, this is usually done by the flight commander or other personnel in the flight department. If an out-of-service aircraft is rescheduled, the cleaner is usually taken over by the operator. Prescribed RTF phrases for towing access are contained in the ICAO PANS-ATM (Doc 4444) and the Radioactive ICAO Manual (Doc 9432).
Conventional Aircraft Tractors
In the past, almost all aircraft models were required to install a ground lock box on at least the nose landing gear during towing operations, but this is no longer the case. If a gear ground lock is fitted for towing, it may need to be removed after the maneuver is completed. When any ground locking box is installed or later removed from the aircraft for towing (or other purposes), such action must be recorded in the aircraft's technical record.
The "traditional" way to allow a ground vehicle to move an aircraft is to attach the landing gear to the nose of the aircraft via a sling. It must be approved for use with a specific aircraft type and must be clearly marked as there is no universal tower standard. Another popular method of towing is to use a special machine called a "drag rope". The nose of the aircraft is equipped with two low-level "arms" on either side of the landing gear, which are used to engage the aircraft's gear legs and lift it slightly off the ground.
Aircraft towing responsibilities of ground crew include ensuring that no part of the aircraft structure impacts fixed objects, vehicles or other aircraft. Aircrew on the ground must communicate with flight deck personnel and both parties must be able to hear ATC communications. In the absence of a type-qualified pilot in flight, the person in charge of the towing ground vehicle is normally responsible for obtaining the necessary ATC aircraft operation approval.
Personnel capabilities on any flight deck may include proper operation of the aircraft's braking system and radios with adequate electrical power and adequate exterior and interior lighting. If possible, the APU can provide power for the brakes using an electric pump and obtain fluid accumulator pressure.

The main threat to aircraft flight safety resulting from towing operations is collision between the aircraft and other aircraft. There are two potential high-risk "crashes":
Ground crew must be particularly aware of these two hazards and must be fully trained in ATC experience and towing of relevant aircraft types. The latter requires awareness of aircraft dimensions and turning curves.
Individuals responsible for communicating with ATC from the towing team do not have adequate RTF skills.
Conducting such operations in the dark or when terrain visibility is poor increases the risk of collision.

On September 27, 2017, an Airbus A320 was being towed from the departure gate in Dublin when the tower sheared and the rope operator lost control. After the tug hit the right engine, there was major damage. The rope operator and auxiliary ground crew were not injured. The investigation concluded that although the peach blossom failure was not linked to any specific cause, the relative levels of effects may have been exceeded.
On 26 December 2016, an Airbus A340-300 returning to Avro RJ100 crashed when its wing was towed to Copenhagen and stalled while taxiing due to the absence of the expected ground crew. RJ100 was there for twelve minutes when it crashed. The survey examined the different expectations of crash drivers, apron controllers and RJ100 crew members in relation to rope drivers' self-satisfaction in what were considered routine, non-stressful tasks. .
On January 13, 2016, ice was found on the upper and lower wing surfaces of a Boeing 777-300ER. Since Lisbon lacked anti-icing facilities, the Sun was moved to a location where it would melt the ice faster, but during an unplanned maneuver, a wing was damaged on contact with an obstacle. The investigation revealed a problem with the operator's refueling policy, which caused a lot of fuel to be refueled on a night flight in the cold.
On June 4, 2002, the crew of an MD82 at FL330 cruise with AP and A/T failed to notice a decrease in airspeed and a simultaneous increase in pitch attitude because neither engine was level. As the aircraft stalls, recovery is achieved with significant altitude before engine thrust recovery and turn. Upon inspection, the engine backfired due to ice crystals obstructing the engine's intake pressure sensor and the crew not applying engine anti-icing as directed. Two safeguards are recommended.

On August 21, 2006, the nose landing gear of a Boeing 737-500 collapsed while taxiing to Newark Liberty International Airport. A technician deployed the aircraft in visual weather conditions at the time of the incident. No one was injured and the small plane was not damaged.
On March 23, 2004, a British Airways Boeing 747-400 flew in broad daylight and on the 747's wingtip, behind a stationary Airbus A321-200 operated by Irish airline Aer Lingus. The A321 was impacted and severely damaged. The towed aircraft was cleared for towing operations and the A321 was positioned with precision. The tow crew was unaware of the collision and, at first, there was some doubt as to the cause of the vibration on the flight deck of the A321, but the cabin crew of the A321 felt the vibration and noticed the nose. The sighted 747 concluded that their plane had crashed. The first officer then observed the damaged wing tip of the 747 and notified ATC of a possible accident. Another aircraft behind the A321 later confirmed that the rudder had been damaged. At the time of the collision, the two aircraft involved were on different ATC frequencies.
On 10 January 2008, an Airbus A380 was damaged during takeoff at Singapore's Changi International Airport, causing the aircraft's right wing undercarriage to become stuck in soft ground adjacent to the taxiway.
On 16 February 2005, at Luton Airport, a Boeing B767-300 struck a rope, breaking a tow-bar blade used to tow the aircraft. The plane rammed into the rope when the ground crew suddenly closed the rope. The impact of the rope caused damage to the fuselage and landing gear.

On 26 June 2007, at Birmingham Airport, UK, BAe Jetstream 41 started its engines without using communication between the ground crew and the flight crew. Failure to remove the drag plate and confusion over the decision to return the aircraft to the gate did not complete the thrust, resulting in the aircraft's nose landing gear collapsing after the aircraft's brakes engaged.
